When will the bleeding stop?

Hello there,

I just wondered if any of you others suffering from endometriosis have periods that go on and on and ON!  I've been bleeding now for the past month and tranexamic acid is doing nothing to stop it.  Later on in the year my husband and I are going to try IVF in the hope of conceiving our first child (I had to have one of my fallopian tubes removed due to the endo) and I only have about a 1% chance of it happening naturally so I've been trying to avoid taking birth control pills or anything like that in case it messes up my hormones for the IVF.

I also need to lose around 3 stone for the IVF and it is SO difficult to hardcore diet when you feel exhausted and in pain.  Has anyone else found they've gained weight with endometriosis and has their been anything particularly helpful in getting the weight off?  I walk everyday for almost an hour and try and eat healthily but do slip up on the weekends or when I am down like this!   I feel so fed up with this disease sometimes!

Thanks for any help anyone can offer me! X

I've had all kinds of irregular bleeding, so I know how you feel.  It's not always heavy, but some months I've had only five days or so when I wasn't bleeding in some way.  My typical period, from start to finish, is usually ten days long or more.  It's so annoying!!  I'm not familiar with the medication you're taking, but my doctor once prescribed a hormone treatment that "resets" your cycle - it makes the bleeding stop while you're on it, then you have a heavy period after you stop the meds, then theoretically you return to a normal cycle after that.

The best mode of weight loss I've found is portion control.  Depriving yourself of certain kinds of food just makes you want them more, so I eat whatever I want in small portions and only when I'm truly hungry.  I don't rely heavily on exercise for weight control because it's not always possible to exercise due to my schedule (and for you, due to the pain/exhaustion).  Typically eating less will cause me to lose weight even without exercise.  I'd also recommend supplementing to make up for the blood loss.

I'm interested to know more about the 1% chance you have of conceiving naturally.  I also had a tube removed due to endo (and an ovary too) but I've never heard that statistic quoted.

    Hi Amanda

Thanks so much for your kind response.  I will ask my doctor about that hormone treatment - can you remember what it was called.  The drugs I was taking are just to try and reduce the bleeding but they don't seem to work any more.  In the past I've been on Zoladex and Lupron which was great in that they stopped the bleeding altogether but bad from other side effects and obviously not something I can take whilst trying to get pregnant (my husband and I want to try and conceive naturally too whilst waiting for the IVF but think this will be pretty impossible given my odds).  I was given the 1% statistic by my Consultant following my last laparoscopy - I have really, really bad endometriosis Stage IV and I think he was just telling me the odds in order to make sure I didn't waste too much time trying to conceive naturally as he really doesn't think it will be possible given the state of my insides and the fact that my other remaining fallopian tube is also really damaged.

Thanks very much for your tips on the weight loss too.  I have also started taking some iron tablets too and a multivitamin.

Thanks again for responding to me.  All the very best, Katie

Hi Kara,  thanks very much for your reply.  Good luck to you with trying for kids and coming off the drugs.  I know how you feel about wanting it all taken out.   I feel the same - I just want to have my kids and then have it all taken out too.  Its gone on for too many years.  Its so frustrating when you want to try for children and then you don't even get a proper cycle - just endless bleeding!  I am the same too in the only thing which has really worked to help the bleeding is to have my periods stopped altogether with drugs but then it takes me forever to get any cycle back and that will probably mess up the IVF.  Think I'll go to the place that does the IVF and ask them what they suggest.  I am starting a new job in April and that's not going to be pleasant when I spend half my time worrying if I am going to leak through my clothes.  Grrrrr!!!  Good luck with your situation and thanks for replying.
